The accountability and chain-of-custody of weapons is critical to the conduct of the military and police, and any organization that issues weapons 'permanently' or on a shift-rotation basis. Having a lost or misplaced weapon is not tolerable, and weapons that get into the 'wrong hands' and that are utilized for committing crimes has to be prevented.

Typical armories include weapons, gear and ammunition, all of which must be tracked on a real-time basis and which must be frequently inventoried. Additionally, maintenance, cleanings, inspections and test-firings must be accomplished on a strict time line and the results documented.
