Health care organizations typically stockpile unnecessary surgical supplies due to inadequacies in the inventory systems utilized to track their use and availability. Further, expensive items periodically pass end-of-life use periods, and must be discarded, whereas if the inventory was up to date, the items could have been used FIFO and/or returned prior to expiration.

RFID antennas at supply rooms and operating rooms can passively monitor surgical tools and supplies, and portable RFID scanners can be utilized for real-time inventories and for indication of delivery to surgical rooms. The inventory database remains current and with FIFO data.

RFID surgical supply / tool cabinets are also available for real-time inventory control including access controls and items added or removed.
